HMD Global unveils the Nokia 8.1 with Snapdragon 710, 4GB RAM and HDR10 display

HMD Global announced a new device called the Nokia 8.1 (2018). The handset is the global variant of the China exclusive Nokia X7. The Nokia 8.1 is not the flagship HMD Global smartphone that most people are hoping for. However, the Nokia 8.1 features premium design and mid-range specs which also brings few key upgrades while retaining a similar price point.

There is a lot of similarities between the X7 and the new Nokia 8.1. The handset goes with the sturdy anodized metal frame, shiny glass back cover, and the 6.18-inch IPS LCD PureDisplay with FHD+ resolution. The Nokia 8.1 features a notched display with 96% NTSC color gamut coverage and DCI-P3 support, an 86.5% screen to body ratio

Under the hood, the specs are the same as well. It goes with the 2.2GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 710 octa-core processor with Adreno 616 GPU. It also has 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and 3,500mAh of battery capacity with 18W fast charging.

In the camera department, the handset sports a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with OIS for stabilization and a 13MP secondary camera. In front, there's a 20MP sensor for selfies. The Nokia 8.1 also has a fingerprint reader at the back, WiFi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth, GPS, and dual SIM slots.

The  Nokia 8.1 also has a fast charging feature. HMD Global claims that the handset can go from 0-50% in just 30 minutes. Its cameras are built with ZEISS optics and tout better low-light photography with a wider aperture.

The  Nokia 8.1 boots with the Android One version of Android Pie out of the box with guaranteed 2 years of OS updates and security updates for 3 years. The Nokia 8.1 comes in blue, silver, steel, copper and iron/steel color options.

The new Nokia 8 will be available globally in Europe, Middle East, and Africa from December 20, 2018. It is priced at EUR 399 or around PHP23.900.
