Captura: A Free Screenshot Organizer That Sorts Receipts, Codes and Chats Automatically

Captura App Review

If you've ever scrolled through hundreds of screenshots looking for one receipt, a verification code, or a chat you saved "for later," you already understand why I built this app. Captura is a screenshot organizer for Android — it reads the text in your screenshots on your device, sorts them into categories automatically, and lets you search any screenshot by what's written in it. No manual filing, no account, no internet access, and it's free to start.

In this post I'll walk through what Captura actually does, who it's for, and what sits behind the one-time Premium upgrade — so you can judge for yourself whether it's worth putting on your phone.

What is Captura?

Captura is a free Android screenshot organizer. Your screenshot folder turns into a junk drawer fast — receipts, one-time codes, chat snippets, boarding passes, all mixed together. Captura reads the text in each screenshot and files it for you, so finding something later is a search instead of a scroll.

Everything Captura reads stays on your device. There's no account to create and the app doesn't need internet access to do its job.

Automatic Organization & Search

This is the core of the app. Once Captura has access to your screenshots, it does the filing in the background:

  • 🗂️ Seven categories — Receipts, Chats, Shopping, OTP, Travel, Troubleshooting, or Other
  • 🏷️ Automatic tags — relevant tags are added for you, no typing needed
  • 🔍 Search by text — search across everything Captura has scanned, including the words inside the image
  • 📌 Pins and notes — pin the screenshots you always need and add your own notes
  • 📥 Share into Captura — send an image to the app from any other app

Verification Codes in One Tap

Screenshotting a code and then hunting for it a minute later is a small annoyance that adds up. Captura handles it directly:

  • Detects screenshots that contain a verification code
  • Copies the code with one tap
  • Clears the code from your clipboard after 60 seconds
  • Premium: optional code alerts and a home-screen widget

Receipts & Spending Insights

Receipts are the screenshots people most often regret losing track of. Captura pulls them together in one place:

  • Receipts are detected automatically, and key details — vendor, amount, and date — are read out
  • Spending Insights summarizes what you've captured
  • Premium: export receipts to CSV or PDF for expense reports

Clean Up Junk Screenshots

Captura also helps you get rid of what you don't need. It finds blank screenshots, duplicates, and expired codes, lets you review them together, and then hands the final decision to Android's own delete dialog — so nothing disappears without your confirmation.

Recently Deleted

Deleted the wrong one? With Premium, Recently Deleted lets you recover deleted screenshots for about 30 days (Android 11 and newer). A restored screenshot comes back exactly as it was — tags, notes, and category included.

Backup & Vault

There are two levels of backup, depending on what you want to protect:

  • Back up tags, pins and notes — free. Saves your organization data to a file you choose (this covers your tags, pins and notes, not the screenshot images themselves)
  • Full vault backup — Premium. An encrypted backup of images, text, categories, tags, pins and notes. Save the file to Drive or another device so a lost phone doesn't mean lost organization

Vault backups are encrypted with a password only you know. Captura can't recover it if you forget it, so keep it somewhere safe.

Privacy & On-Device Processing

Captura reads your screenshots locally. Nothing is sent to a server, there's no account, and the text it reads stays on your phone. For an app that deals with receipts and verification codes, that was non-negotiable for me. There's also an optional App Lock with PIN or biometrics (Premium), plus light, dark, or system theme.

Who Captura is For

  • Heavy screenshotters whose gallery is buried under years of captures
  • Freelancers and small business owners who screenshot receipts and payment confirmations and need them later for expenses
  • Online shoppers and travelers who save order details, boarding passes, and bookings as images
  • Anyone who has ever lost a verification code or a saved chat in the scroll

Free vs. Captura Premium

The free version covers automatic sorting, tagging, search, verification code copying, receipt detection with Spending Insights, clean-up, pins and notes, theme options, and backup of your tags, pins and notes.

Captura Premium is a one-time purchase with no subscription. It unlocks:

  • Full encrypted vault backup
  • Receipt export (CSV and PDF)
  • Custom categories
  • Recently Deleted (about 30 days, Android 11+)
  • App Lock with PIN or biometrics
  • Verification-code alerts and home-screen widget
  • Future premium features, as announced

In the Philippines the one-time unlock is ₱310; pricing in other regions is shown in your local currency in the app.

Good to Know

  • Captura needs Android 8 or newer
  • It needs photo access to find your screenshots. On Android 14 with "selected photos," it only sees the photos you pick
  • Text recognition works best with Latin-script text (English, Spanish, French and similar)

Getting Started

  1. Download Captura from the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap Continue on the welcome screen and allow photo access so Captura can find your screenshots.
  3. Let it scan — your existing screenshots are sorted and tagged automatically.
  4. Browse by category, or search for any word that appears in a screenshot.
  5. Back up your tags, pins and notes from Settings whenever you like.

Try Captura

If your screenshot folder has turned into a junk drawer, this is the problem Captura was built to solve — automatic sorting, search by text, and nothing leaving your phone.
